Series of C-Prints

Women is a series of portraits of women of diverse backgrounds, and is an exploration of stereotypes and art historical references. Roy was inspired by women in her personal life, and how they could be transformed into iconic imagery. For example, Olympia I and II are inspired by Manet's painting by the same name. Manet's Olympia was controversial at the time because he used a well known prostitute as his model. Here we are confronted with a pregnant woman in repose. Roy’s Olympia is both the prostitute and the mother; she embodies the dichotomy of the stereotypical gender roles that persist in our day.
